The lead singer of soul group, Dru Hill, Sisqo was singing about it while big bottomed women gyrated to the funky groove and paraded in them in his video. Pop stars Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera had pre-teen and teen girls asking their mothers to buy them (thongs) to wear with their low rider jeans. As a parent of a teen girl, I was one of those parents having to explain why it is inappropriate. Who would have thought that a simple piece of string would become so popular only to eventually become outlawed? Maybe, it is because the thong has been exposed a little too much causing the need for the government to regulate women's fashions. The regulation of the thong is almost equivalent to the bras burnt by feminist in the late 1960s and 1970s. However, many who burnt the bras are more than likely wishing they didn't because of the effects of gravity. There was much more symbolism behind the burning of the bra besides sagging breast. Although women will miss not having a panty line and in some cases men as well, I doubt if anyone will began burning thongs or mourn them either.

Are american women free?

American women may not be as liberated as they believe. In the pursuit of liberty or feminism shouldn't women refuse to help perpetuate the myth of beauty? Afterall, it is men who set the standards to this myth. Women are not running around with jeans hanging off their asses for other women, somewhere women have been given the message that the myth of beauty is a truth.

In a country where a former first lady, Hillary Rodham-Clinton was constantly ridiculed for her independence and being a non-traditional presidential wife, it could not happen here. Unlike the U.S. government where domestic and foreign policy issues are decided upon by the two political parties: republican or democract, European governments are often controlled by more than one political party. According to Gundrun Schyman, the 57 year-old former leader of the communist Left Party vows to create a feminist party to focus on gender equality.

"Focusing on feminist issues within an existing party structure is not enough. For women's voices to be heard one needs to have a very clear mandate that states what this is about: breaking the patriarchal power structure," said Schyman.
